Counseling for Autism Spectrum Disorder

If you are not on the autism spectrum, odds are high that you know someone who is.  Symptoms can range in severity, but usually include at least a few of the following:

  • Social difficulties
  • Sensory issues
  • Sensory integration issues
  • Anxiety
  • Transition struggles
  • Strict adherence to routines and rituals

All of the symptoms listed above can lead to frequent and intense overwhelming meltdowns. And because symptoms can vary in severity and type, autism is not always easy to pinpoint. But as our understanding of the condition expands, so does the terminology.

For example, Autism and Asperger’s syndrome were once considered separate diagnoses. Now, each person on the spectrum receives the same diagnosis: ASD, or Autism Spectrum Disorder. Spectrum allows for mild to moderate to severe symptoms.

At NPS, we offer screenings for a number of mental health illnesses and disorders. If you believe that you, your child, or a loved one has ASD but has not received a diagnosis, take a look at our helpful checklist

The symptoms of autism range from mild to dramatic, making it impossible to diagnose without the help of a qualified medical professional. In our clinic, we don’t put labels on our clients. Instead, we use mental health diagnoses to better understand the unique needs of each person we work with. Reach out today if you have questions about the checklist or would like to learn more about ASD, its treatments, and how to receive an accurate diagnosis.
