Childhood PTSD
What is it?
Traumatic childhood events include emotional, physical, or sexual abuse, neglect by caregivers, accidents, and bearing witness to violence. Childhood Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or CPTSD, occurs when a child continues to re-experience their trauma through flashbacks or nightmares.
3 Reasons it Matters
- CPTSD leaves the child in a state of hyper arousal called fight or flight, creating a high state of constant or triggered anxiety.
- It may impact a child’s ability to focus and concentrate, resulting in school or work struggles.
- Flashbacks and nightmares may lead to depression, and the child may feel irritable as a result. It’s not uncommon for children with PTSD to act out in defiance or have overwhelming meltdowns.
