Generational Trauma

What is it?

Generational trauma is trauma that is passed on from one generation to the next. It often manifests as behavioral patterns or emotional responses.

3 Reasons it Matters

  1. The traumatic event may be a major historical event, such as a war, interpersonal violence or abuse, or discrimination/oppression.
  2. Mental health issues, substance abuse, unhealthy relationship patterns, physical health issues, and continued patterns of violence/abuse are all possible effects of generational trauma.
  3. Recognizing generational trauma helps you identify the source of the pattern of pain. This helps you develop new healthy patterns when confronted with current stress or challenges.
